OUR HISTORY

A treasured Milwaukee Landmark,
re-envisioned with Modern Glamour.

It all started when…

When Owner, Real Estate Developer, and Interior Designer Kate Crowle entered the sanctuary of St. James Episcopal Church in February of 2017 after hearing the congregation was selling the property. Kate instantly fell in love with the original beauty of the space and began envisioning all the possibilities of what the St. James could become.

Originally designed and built by the founders in early English Gothic Style, St. James beautifully captures the charm of European church in both design and detail. It is believed to be the oldest stone church in Milwaukee.

When renovating and repurposing St. James 1868 into a historic events venue, Kate kept the needs and desires of couples in mind. Materials selected for both the interior and exterior were chosen for both their function and elegance. Lighting, mirrors, paint colors, flooring and furnishings were thoughtfully selected and of European motif. Protecting the integrity of the building while carefully incorporating modern amenities was crucial to the design process of St. James 1868!

During her University years…

Kate had the opportunity to live and study abroad in London. It became the first of many trips to that country during which Kate fell in love with European architecture. She has a love for traveling across Europe influenced many of the decor decisions made throughout St. James 1868 and creation for our couples to experience their own Royal Wedding.

Growing up in a small historic city in southern Michigan, Kate has always had a true appreciation for treasured objects and structures that have survived centuries and speak to people’s past. St James still stands, over 150 years later, thanks to good fortune, the ongoing care of a dedicated and faithful congregation and the protection awards through the National Registry of Historic Places.

Entering the Church

The Abbey is a standout. With it’s grand 72 foot aisle, cathedral ceiling, intricate carvings and lovely stained glass windows (every pair unique and one pair an original Tiffany) the environment is a true, luxury experience for our couples and their guests.

In creating the intimate Duke and Duchess Suites, no detail was spared. The same can be said for the less formal Hyde venue, located above and to the back of the church. All are spaces for comfortable, elegant gatherings of all kinds, lending itself to countless photo opportunities. It is here, at St. James1868, that precious memories are made with family and friends that will last a lifetime.

We welcome you to our little piece of Europe in the heart of Milwaukee. We offer our history at St. James 1868 to be part of a shared history with you.
